Fishing from rocks continues to be one of New Zealand’s most dangerous pastimes. Five fishers lost their lives off Auckland’s west coast in late 2005, initiating the implementation of the West Coast Rock-based Fishing Project (WCRBF). Despite the persistence of rock-based-fishing fatalities on Auckland’s west coast, little was known about this fishing fraternity, their demographics, perceptions of the associated risk of drowning or their water safety behaviours when fishing at hazardous locations.
Drowning Prevention Auckland is using ActiveXchange to obtain data on when and where people are fishing to maximise efficiency in tailoring site specific education pieces, for those harder to reach.
Identify approximate numbers of fishers, where fishers are heading, and what times they are visiting
Locate fishing hot spots, and prioritise educational site visits based on visitation habits and trends
Provide targeted education with data-driven rostering, to educate fishers in hard-to-reach locations
In the past few years the project has had rock-based fishing advisors working within the Surf Life Saving Northern Region Regional Lifeguard Service as well as Drowning Prevention Auckland’s Aquatic Educators. They were contracted to visit the rocks and complete surveys to understand perceptions, competence, and knowledge of fishers. Previously this has been completed with anecdotal knowledge of best times to reach fishers.
Efficiency, safety, and confidence.
DPA are now able to take the guesswork out of sending staff to remote locations. They know that fishers will more likely be at a site between hour x and hour y which enables DPA to make informed decisions around staff deployment and time on site, to capture and educate as many fishers as possible.
Helps DPA to be more efficient when deciding what times and where staff need to go to reach fishers in hard to reach, isolated locations.
Informs DPA rostering of staff to follow when visiting popular sites on the Auckland west coast, increasing likelihood of educating fishers attending these sites.
ActiveXchange data allows DPA to draw a more accurate picture of the total numbers of rock-based fishers at Auckland’s west coast beaches. Previously we could only reach fishers when advisors visited, and we would take snapshot data of the numbers fishing at that time. This data enables us to determine the reach of our educational initiatives.
"ActiveXchange data allows us to plan more efficiently for maximum impact of drowning prevention education and safer rock-based fishing from the limited project funds available."
